This intervention is part of the partnership programme between UNICEF and the Government of Mozambique for the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector in the Province of Cabo Delgado — a region historically affected by basic infrastructure shortfalls and, more recently, by the impacts of population displacement caused by internal conflict.
The project's central objective was to sustainably expand access to safe drinking water for rural communities and for populations returning to their places of origin, contributing directly to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and, transversally, to SDGs 3 (Health), 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and 11 (Sustainable Communities).
Under Lot 1 of contract no. 43432753, SC Nasser delivered the construction of five Multipurpose Water Supply Systems (SAA MUS), powered exclusively by photovoltaic solar energy in off-grid configuration. Two systems were installed in the district of Palma and three in the district of Mocimboa da Praia, integrating water intake, solar pumping, storage tanks and distribution networks sized for domestic, sanitary and productive use.
The location of the works, in districts deeply affected by the instability of recent years, gave the project a significant humanitarian dimension. The systems serve rural communities and displaced families that have returned to their areas of origin, supporting the restoration of basic living conditions and the gradual rebuilding of communities in Cabo Delgado.
SC Nasser acted as the executing contractor for Lot 1, mobilising teams, equipment and logistics adapted to the requirements of operating in remote terrain and in a context of high sensitivity. Execution was conducted in close coordination with the client and local authorities, observing the environmental and social safeguards applicable to programmes with international funding.
The works were concluded with the operational handover of all five systems, ready to deliver safe and continuous water supply to the target populations. The project consolidates SC Nasser's experience in delivering integrated and sustainable WASH solutions in rural and remote areas of Mozambique, particularly in operationally complex environments.
